A very special happy birthday to aeronautical engineer, Air Force test pilot, and NASA astronaut Col. Frank Frederick Borman II, who turns 90 years old today! Frank was the commander of Gemini VII and Apollo 8, the sole astronaut investigator on the Apollo 1 review board, one of the first humans to fly around the moon, and currently the oldest living former American astronaut.
“And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so. And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters he called the Seas: and God saw that it was good. And from the crew of Apollo 8, we close with good night, good luck, a Merry Christmas – and God bless all of you, all of you on the good Earth.”
“Exploration is the essence of the human spirit.”
“When you’re finally up at the moon looking back on earth, all those differences and nationalistic traits are pretty well going to blend, and you’re going to get a concept that maybe this really is one world and why the hell can’t we learn to live together like decent people.”
