Christmas in Space: Day 2

Future astronaut and ice skating extraordinaire Roger Chaffee on his family’s homemade skating rink in Grand Rapids, Michigan, sometime in the 1940s.

From the 1968 biography of Roger, On Course to the Stars:

“The whole family worked hard scraping away the snow, packing it down firmly, building a rim around the area and then spraying it with the garden hose. Many times Don [Roger’s father] could be found re-spraying the pond at midnight so the children might find a smooth surface waiting for them the next day.

Roger learned to skate on this backyard pond. After a considerable number of bumps and tumbles, he became a master of the blades and was allowed to go to the city parks on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.”

“Lieutenant Grissom is a sincere, diligent and highly capable officer. He is jovial and manages to maintain his joviality and composure under very trying circumstances… This officer’s cooperation and effectiveness have been an inspiration and a driving impetus to his subordinates and fellow officers. His loyalty, strong devotion to duty, keen sense of fair play, and understanding of human frailties have instilled traits in his subordinates which rank them high in their respective classes.

Lt. Grissom, being clean-cut and neat of dress, has been a credit to the Air Force in his appearance as well as in his actions and deeds… It is felt that the traits embodied within this officer rank him high amongst his fellow officers and that he should be given special consideration toward advancement.” -Overall evaluation from reporting officer, 1953

Anyone have any baby/childhood photos of Wally? I’m working on an edit and I’ve found at least a few of each of the other Seven, but none of him

I’ve looked for childhood photos of Wally in the past without success. There’s a photo of him as a naval academy midshipman in his book, which is the most youthful I’ve ever seen Wally. *shrugs*
